From kindergarten to the final years of secondary school, Peter’s Heart students are taking important steps toward brighter futures.
For 20 students sponsored by Peter’s Heart, this is a season of achievement, anticipation, and new possibilities. These young learners are preparing to advance to the next level of their education, reaching milestones that represent years of hard work, perseverance, and support.
Their accomplishments are especially meaningful in Uganda, where many children face significant barriers to completing their education.
Understanding Uganda’s Education System
Unlike the United States, Uganda's education system includes several important transition points, each marked by national examinations that help determine a student's next steps.
After seven years of primary school, students take the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), which determines their eligibility to continue to secondary school.
Secondary education is divided into two levels:
Senior 1–4 (Ordinary Level): Students complete four years of lower secondary education, culminating in the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations. After Senior 4, students may continue to advanced secondary education or pursue vocational and technical training.
Senior 5–6 (Advanced Level): Students complete two additional years of academically focused secondary education, culminating in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations. Successful candidates may qualify for university or other higher education opportunities.
For Peter’s Heart, this year's group includes eight students completing Senior 4, a particularly significant turning point in their educational journeys. Another student, Mabonga George, is completing Senior 6 and preparing for the possibility of college. Other students are reaching milestones in primary school and kindergarten.
Why These Milestones Matter
Completing secondary education in Uganda is a considerable achievement.
According to a 2026 UNESCO education report, only about 20% of Ugandan young people complete upper secondary education. Even at the lower secondary level, estimated completion rates in 2024 were approximately 33% for girls and 39% for boys.
These statistics highlight the significance of what Peter’s Heart students are working to accomplish. For children growing up in Kampala's underserved communities, financial hardship and family instability can make it difficult to remain in school, much less progress toward higher education.
Through school sponsorship, mentorship, and ongoing family support, Peter’s Heart helps children overcome obstacles that might otherwise interrupt their education. Last year, Peter’s Heart’s first high school graduate, Christine, was able to enroll in college to study accounting.
Opening Doors to a Different Future
For these 20 students, each new educational level represents more than academic advancement. It brings opportunities to develop new skills, pursue meaningful careers, and build greater financial stability for themselves and their families.
Without the support of Peter’s Heart, their educational journeys might have looked very different.
Today, they are preparing for the next chapter with the encouragement of mentors, teachers, families, and a community of supporters who believe in their potential.
Their progress is a powerful reminder of what sustained investment in a child's education can make possible—not just for one student, but for generations to come.
