From Struggle to Strength—Mayi’s Journey

Mayimuna—known affectionately as Mayi—is now a bright and spirited 7-year-old, but her life looked very different just a couple of years ago. When the Peter’s Heart Uganda team first met her, Mayi and her mother were living in a single rented room after her father had abandoned the family. Although she was old enough for school, her mother had no income and no way to afford her education.

Peter’s Heart stepped in to help by enrolling Mayi at Muteesa II Memorial School and connecting her with medical support at Mengo Hospital. At first, Mayi was withdrawn and guarded—understandable given the hardship and instability she had experienced at such a young age. But over time, and with the encouragement of her mentors, Mayi began to open up.

“We want to praise God for the transformation we’ve seen in Mayi since she joined the Peter’s Heart program,” one mentor shared. “She has become friendly, loving, and enjoys helping with activities both at school and during center days at our office. She even helps wash dishes without being asked, and her teacher reports that she’s now very cooperative in class.”

Mayi has also made great progress academically, earning strong marks on her recent school reports.

Meanwhile, her mother Hattie received support from Peter’s Heart to find work at a nearby restaurant, where she now prepares food and washes dishes. Sometimes, Mayi even helps her mom after school.

With her new income, Hattie is able to contribute toward Mayi’s school fees—a source of pride that has brought dignity and renewed confidence. The family was also able to move to a safer, more comfortable home outside of a flood-prone area. Their new room is clean and cozy, complete with a proper bed, mosquito net, and even a second mattress for Mayi, who is growing fast.

Thanks to the support of Peter’s Heart and the generosity of its donors, Mayi and her mother are now building a better life—together.
