Meet "Jacob" and "Helen"

“Jacob” is a 9 year old boy who is now in school for the first time through Peter’s Heart. His mother is a Rwandan refugee whose husband died in a motor cycle accident while they were still in the refugee settlement. She came to Kampala 5 years ago with “Jacob” and his younger brother without any means to support themselves except through prostitution. They live in a rented single room which floods during rainy season. “Jacob” is now passionate about school where he gets regular meals and is blossoming into a happy boy.

“Helen” is 6 and this is also her first school experience. She has 3 siblings and her single mother is desperately trying to find food to feed her family earning money in her “hawker” business, selling handicrafts or food items she can obtain. The family lives in a single room in the slum of Kampala, that also floods in the rainy season.
