Building Community, One Relay Race at a Time

A day of games, laughter, and shared experiences reminded children and families that everyone belongs.

Sometimes the most important lessons children learn don't happen in the classroom.

Recently, Peter's Heart families joined hundreds of students, parents, and teachers for Field Day at Christ Care Junior School. The day was filled with relay races, sack races, traditional dance, team competitions, laughter—and something even more meaningful. Belonging.

For many of the children Peter's Heart serves, opportunities like this are about much more than winning medals. They're about being fully included in the life of their school alongside classmates from every background.

"Our families blended so well with everyone else," said Peter's Heart staff member Michael. "You wouldn't tell which family was struggling and which family was well-off. We were all the same."

Parents wore their team's colors, cheered from the sidelines, celebrated victories, and encouraged every child—not just their own. One father proudly watched his daughter, Divine, laugh her way through a relay event. Staff also celebrated Jordan's speed on the track and Julius's determination as he picked himself up after falling during the sack race and crossed the finish line anyway.

Every child participated.

Every family belonged.

Perhaps the most touching story came after the event, when one mother shared how anxious she had been before arriving. At other school events, she explained, parents are often expected to purchase treats like ice cream or roasted chicken for their children. She simply couldn't afford it.

But this event was different. "Every child was treated the same," she shared with the Peter's Heart team. There were no food stalls or expensive extras that would leave some children feeling left out. Everyone enjoyed the day together. 

That sense of equality matters. As longtime Peter's Heart supporter James Anderson observed during the team's monthly meeting: "You're building community... nobody's the star, but the community is the joy."

For Peter's Heart, events like Field Day aren't simply celebrations. They're opportunities for children to build confidence, for parents to feel welcomed, and for schools to become true communities. Because when children know they belong, they are free to grow.
