Hope’s Mother Shares Her Harvest

Pictured above are Jerusah in the traditional African dress and our mentors Aidah and Geoffrey Jr.

The primary mission of Peter’s Heart is to reach the vulnerable children of the Kampala slums, but the mission extends to the families of these children. The mentors we have on staff routinely reach out to the mothers and guardians who are often struggling at home with additional children, just to provide food. When the need for food is overwhelming, like during the raining season, Peter’s Heart provides food supplies, including soap, sugar, rice, corn, flour, and beans to support the families.

Hope N. is one of our first enrollees in Peter’s Heart and is now at Seroma High School doing very well. Her mother, Jerusah Bwiwo, is grateful for this assistance for over seven years and has been able to develop her skills in agriculture to help sustain her family. On a borrowed piece of land from a friend, she has planted beans and after about four months she harvested a bumper crop.

During a home visit, Jerusah took our mentors, Aidah and Geoffrey Jr., on a tour of the garden where she harvests beans. She even gave them some beans to take back to the office, where the staff cooked them as an addition to their lunch meal. Everyone enjoyed the harvest from Jerusah’s garden, and it gave her great joy to give back to the organization that provides for her daughter’s education— an opportunity she would otherwise not have received.

What a sign of progress among the mothers we are trying to help!
